Gregory of Tours
- (c. 538–94)Bishop and Historian.Gregory was consecrated Bishop of Tours in France in 573. He is remembered for his Historia Francorum, which covers the history of the Frankish people from the creation of the world to his own times. Although some of it is based on original documents, much of the history is doubtful. None the less the book gives an invaluable picture of Gaul in the sixth century. Gregory also wrote eight hagiographical works and was a dedicated Bishop, who instituted important reforms in his diocese.J.M.
